Resumo:
Background: Some observations have been important, such as evidence of cases of the disease spread via nosocomial transmission. These data highlight the importance of epidemiological studies reporting the behavior of COVID-19 within hospitals. Objectives: To describe the profile of deaths that occurred in a private hospital in Brazil during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020. Methods: Using the database from a private hospital in Brazil, this cross-sectional observational study observed deaths that occurred from March 22 to May 24, 2020. Results: Of 152 deaths, 91 were caused by COVID-19. Fifty of these confirmed cases were from male patients, and 54 had comorbidities; their mean age was 71 ± 12 years. Among them, 15 were admitted without conditions related to COVID-19; they had a three-fold higher number of hospital transfers than those admitted with COVID-19 symptoms. Sixteen patients with COVID-19 developed respiratory symptoms just after hospitalization. Examination was performed on an average of 4 (± 6) days after symptom onset and 6 (± 6) days after admission, and the average time from respiratory symptom onset to death was 4 (± 6) days. Conclusions: These data suggest the presence of nosocomial COVID-19 infection, which may be related to the amount of sector transfers and delay in diagnosis confirmation.
